One fewer person on the FBI Ten Most Wanted List:
I'm sure by now, you've heard about Warren Steed Jeffs, the polygamist child-molestor on the FBI Ten Most Wanted List, being arrested during a routine traffic stop in Nevada in a red 2007 Cadillac Escalade. I mentioned the car's color because on Larry King Live, one of the members of his sect who ran away the day before she was to be wed to some older pervo when she was 14 years old mentioned that the color red is considered evil by that sect. I know little about that cult and care even less, but I find that a bit odd, perhaps even Freudian. I've read a bit about this guy, and every article I've read about him has disturbed me on a different level. He truly belonged on a list of the worst criminals who have committed crimes against citizens of the United States, and his capture can only be a good thing for the people of the states of Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. I wish Mr. Jeffs a long life in prison, preferrably served in the general population and assigned to a cell with a large, scary cellmate who, as a child, was subjected to the same kind of abuse he inflicted on so many children.

Whether or not you care about that kind of stuff, "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer is a fine read. It details some of what goes on with fundamentalist Mormon groups. I found it appalling... I know that just about all Mormons are not like Jeffs, of course... I live in an area with a rather high percentage of LDS population (probably around 20%)... but the small percentage of them that are genuine total whackjobs gives their whole religion a bad name to those who might not know better.
I find someone like Jeffs, and people like those written about in Krakauer's book, to be disgusting. Using religion to justify the use of a drug, like some American Indians might do with peyote, is something I can understand. But using religion to justify men having sex with underage girls is just plain wrong. I am also very glad to see Jeffs apprehended, and I also hope he spends lots of time in jail, with unsympathetic people.
I fully agree that he and his ilk are disgusting. Unfortunately, it took this and possible indications that he may try to pull a David Koresh to elevate him to that high a priority among law enforcement agencies.
I do know little about their specific dogmas and care even less, but I do care about the harm to children done in the name of their beliefs. That point you made about him and his ilk casting the wider Mormon community in a negative light is one of the things I find the most frustrating about this situation. I still don't understand why the FBI released the other two adults in the vehicle with Jeffs, and hope this does not cause further harm.
