A positive thought about Bill Gates...

I've been thinking a lot about Microsoft's WGA snafu, about which I reported recently. I also heard that Bill Gates is making plans to switch to part-time as of 2008. I got to thinking about it, and somehow, the strange and as yet unplotted workings of my mind got me to thinking about military culture. From what little I understand of the culture of the U.S. military, if an officer for any reason feels they cannot perform their duties, if they feel strongly enough, their duty is to resign. While I cannot even begin to speculate on the reasoning behind Mr. Gates' decision, and whether or not the WGA snafu had anything to do with that, I think the timing in and of itself is very interesting, and I think, at least raises that question. Or, maybe he's just getting old and wants to spend more time with his family and his other commitments. Either way, this is good news for the world and (hopefully not) good news for Microsoft.

Well, it's not where he's getting old he's just a couple of years older than I am.
I'd say it's where the business is getting beyond him and it's not "fun" anymore.
At this stage in the life of Microsoft, it has nowhere to go but down and Bill knows it.
Any "innovation" or new area of profit discovery MS makes is going to be both costly and met with resistance because MS has become "The Evil Empire", a status once held by Ma Bell and IBM but now the domain of Microsoft.

The real begining of the downfall started when MS decided to be an application monster in addition to holding the defacto monopoly on the OS.
I think many of us would have continued to support the idea of a valuable STANDARD for an OS if they had not tried to own it all.

Though that may be true, I think the true beginning of their downfall was the manner in which they went about their anti-piracy efforts and their actions during the "browser wars" of the 1990s. That made Microsoft more enemies among the programmers and finally made them angry enough to start doing something about it, hence the myriad Linux and fewer BSD and other *nix distros out there.
