Music Review: Matisyahu

I was flipping through channels recently, and I happened across Matisyahu's video to his song "King Without a Crown." For those unfamiliar with him, Matisyahu is a reggae/hip hop artist whose lyrics, from what I can tell so far, are actually spiritual and uplifting. Matisyahu (born Matthew) Miller is a Lubavitch Hasidic Jew, and a highly talented vocalist. I'm not sure if I would go out and buy one of his CD's or not, but that one single reminded me of something I once had a long time ago: A deep, abiding hope for the future, though truth be told, I can't remember when I last had that. So, for that, I salute him and wish him well.

Yeah, I saw an interview with that guy. I'm not a big reggae fan but I liked him. He seemed extremely spiritual and sincere.

I visited his website, and he scored about a million points for coolness with one announcement. He'd had a sold-out concert scheduled for Boston on February 12, and while it was very snowy there and it may have been dangerous to get there, he was performing. However, he offered to refund the price of the ticket to anyone who felt they would be putting themselves in danger by going to his concert. It's nice to see an up-and-coming recording artist who cares that much for their fans, and for that, he scores some very serious coolness points. I'd wager those bastards in Metallica wouldn't've done something that selfless.
